County of San Diego is on the Way to Becoming the First HOPE Inspired Community!

HOPE Vision

Our Vision is a world that recognizes, honors, and promotes positive experiences because they are fundamental to people’s health and well-being.

Healthy Outcomes from Positive Experiences (HOPE), developed by Tufts Medical Center, emphasizes the critical role of positive childhood experiences (PCEs).

Based on research demonstrating that secure relationships, a sense of belonging, and connectedness can enhance resilience and mitigate childhood trauma and adversity, the HOPE framework underscores the importance of individual and community strengths. It prioritizes inclusion, belonging, and equity, advocating for universal access to PCEs through a range of programs, practices, and policies across the various environments where families live, work, learn, and play.

Beginning in 2021, YMCA Childcare Resource Service joined the first cohort of the HOPE Innovation Network, which laid the foundation for HOPE collaboration and implementation in San Diego County. Over the past several years, the YMCA and numerous local community partners have embraced the HOPE Framework and woven its principles into the fabric of their work within the community. As of September 2024, 661 participants had attended one of the 25 HOPE trainings. An additional eight participants had attended a train the facilitator session. The facilitators include Community Health Workers, Promotoras, and other community partners.

Four Building Blocks of HOPE

Emotional growth through playing and interacting with peers for self-awareness and self-regulation.

Social and civic engagement to develop a sense of belonging and connectedness.

Safe, stable, and equitable environments for living, playing, and learning at home and in school.

Relationships within the family and with other children and adults through interpersonal activities.
